 H.Res.88 - 117th Congress (2021-2022

H.Res.88 is a bill introduced to Congress by House Representative Herrera Beutler,
Jaime, on February 2, 2021. It seeks to address the issue of women's cardiovascular health as a
critical health care priority that affects all the States. It acknowledges that there are increased
health care costs and a need for increased awareness of the symptoms of heart diseases among
women, and the need for education on the same. The policy also seeks to alleviate the risk of
heart diseases among women (Res.88, 2021-2022).
Heart disease is the leading killer of women in the United States, accounting for more
than four hundred thousand deaths per year. In 2019 the recorded deaths of women from heart
disease in the US was three hundred and one thousand, two hundred and eighty. Cardiovascular
diseases are the leading cause of death in women (Magun et al., 2020). It is a challenge since
heart disease or heart attack symptoms in women differ from those of men. Heart attack
symptoms among women are usually not recognized and can be mistaken for fatigue, backache,
shortness of breath or even indigestion. The majority of the women experiencing heart attacks in
the United States do not exhibit the usually recognized male symptoms, which usually leads to
incorrect diagnosis (Ai-ris & Molina, 2019). There have been very few studies on cardiovascular
diseases among women compared to men, with about thirty-six percent of participants in the
studies being women.
The bill's adoption will increase the research on cardiovascular diseases in women. This
will allow for early detection of the diseases and, in turn, increase the chances of survival of

most of the women. It is also important since it will help reduce the cost of health care in the
United States, projected at over one trillion dollars by 2035.
