Wisdom in Nursing Informatics and Professional Nursing Judgment
The concepts of wisdom in nursing informatics and professional nursing judgment are
closely linked, with little distinction in their application. They are essential for providing high-
quality patient care by enhancing informed decisions.
Nursing informatics involves applying information and communication technology to
achieve nursing practice, education, and administrative research. As such, focus on the effective
utilization of technology in an ethical manner to improve patient outcomes (Benner, 2019).
Wisdom, as used in nursing informatics, encompasses critical thinking, adaptability, and the
ability to incorporate technological advancements into nursing practices while taking into
perspective the needs and safety of the patients.
Conversely, professional nursing judgment entails the ability of a nurse to utilize their
clinical expertise, experience, and knowledge to come up with informed decisions. As such, it
involves analyzing complex situations, interpreting patient data, and using practices based on
evidence to provide quality care (Matney, 2020). Thus, it is pegged on continuous learning and
reflective practices.
The Data, Information, Knowledge, and Wisdom Model (DIKW) fundamentally guides
my practice as a healthcare professional. Accordingly, I utilize raw and unorganized data from
various sources like lab results and patient vital signs, process them, and develop meaningful
healthcare information. I rely on the knowledge derived from information patterns and integrate
it with experience and clinical judgment.
I utilize and rely on the DIKW model in my daily practice to come up with decisions that
are not only based on data and evidence but also patient-centered. In addition, I am reminded by

the DIKW model to continue learning since wisdom evolves through experience, integration, and
reflection of new knowledge.
