Healthcare Experience

My name is Karina, and I live in New York. I have a three-year-old daughter and a nine-
month-old baby boy that always keeps me busy. I love being with my family, watching movies,
and traveling. I am a medical assistant working on getting a bachelor's degree in healthcare
administration management. Once I earn my degree, my goal is to continue working within the
healthcare system and hopefully at the same company. I believe this course will be very
interesting and beneficial. I hope to gain valuable skills to help me in my future career and goals.
As a healthcare professional, there are several experiences rooted in the healthcare
system. I can remember one of my friends told me that she had a very bad experience when she
visited certain healthcare for reproductive health services mainly for screening and treatment of
sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). She said she received a cold treatment with criticism from
the health care provider who was assigned to the department. The staff proved to be rude and
harsh while handling her. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youths do get poor
quality of health care due to stigma, lack of healthcare providers’ awareness, and insensitivity to
the unique needs of the community.
Based on the situation, I felt that the lady was not treated right since healthcare services
should be provided appropriately with a lot of dignity, respect, and care to every individual
regardless of their religion, gender and sex. The incident brought painted a bad picture of the
healthcare system and demoralizes the clients.
If only the stigmas that rotate on LGBT could be uplifted, the clients could receive good
quality care and the healthcare system would receive many clients. As one of the healthcare
providers, the experience touched me but it never changed my positive perception of healthcare
providers. I still believe that not all healthcare providers do act rude to their clients.
