Practicum Activities Reflection

During the fifth and sixth weeks of the practicum, students were responsible for
obtaining the findings of the communication survey and compiling the data. As a result, the
preceptor and the OR desk personnel worked together to construct a functional strategy for
communication between the OR desk crew and the anesthesia team, which was then
presented to the class. Over these two weeks, the focus was on business skills relevant to
nurse executive competency abilities. More precisely, the creation and execution of
emergency preparation strategies after the COVID spike. The meeting with human resources
was also discussed, as was how to lobby for and contribute to creating compensation
schemes. Apart from that, we spoke about the management of resources, particularly personal
protective equipment, and the preparation of performance evaluations (AONE, 2015). The
Joint Commission (JC) and regulatory compliance remain the primary focus, albeit it seems
that the JC has delayed surveys once again.
The scope of the practicum project and its alignment with the aims of the business and
one's own purpose in a leadership position were the topics of discussion during weeks five
and six of the practicum. Because the project's scope includes communication and
cooperation across teams, it is aligned with the organization's aims of providing world-class
patient care while also advancing medical knowledge via research through collaboration and
communication. Employees may participate in the change required to improve patient
outcomes when the servant leader communicates the company objectives to comprehend. The
servant-leader exhibits bravery and realizes that they can profit from the experiences and
contributions of others, which they do so with humility (Kouzes & Posner, 2017)

Application of Leadership

3
To be successful throughout this period of COVID, the nurse leader must adopt a
servant leadership attitude. In the face of the stress and uncertainty that the team is feeling,
the servant leader must encourage them and recognize their successes. My preceptor has
shown compassion in meetings with administration and human resources. He has publicly
advocated for the team by stating that UAB is a level one trauma hospital that cares for the
sickest and most challenging patients and that the team should be compensated.
The servant-leader must prioritize the needs of others above their own, given that
servant leadership is a collaborative endeavor (Frick, 2004). When I look at my preceptor's
leadership style, it's difficult to determine if he is leading or commanding. The practice of
approaching one's staff for aid when confronted with a challenging challenge is popular
among business executives. My preceptor has also received praise from many colleagues for
advocating for issues that are important to them, such as equal pay. I've been shadowing my
preceptor for a few weeks now, and throughout many of the exchanges, my preceptor has
been supportive and has helped me make contacts with other workers. Employers may benefit
from making their workers feel safe and secure while also making them feel protected and
valued at the same time (DelHousaye and Brewer, 2004).

Practicum Project Preparation

The initiative coincides with the organization's mission to provide world-class patient
care and advance medical science via research and a dedication to an approach that puts
patients and their families first in care delivery. Quality care and compassionate attention for
every patient, no matter their differences or circumstances, are at the heart of Always Care's
Core Values: Listen with empathy, be kind, and help people in need, if you can. Own it: Be
responsible, take action, and make it happen, if you want to succeed. Work Together: Be a
team player and establish consensus by thinking win-win. Do the right thing: stick to your
guns, abide by your values, and avoid causing damage to anybody (UAB Medicine, n.d.).

With these ideals in place, the organization's aims are supported by the problem of
communication and cooperation. Providing high-quality patient care requires strong
teamwork and open lines of communication between all healthcare team members.
