Hello,
You are right. When groups or team members are not functioning cohesively, it can lead
to disastrous consequences. In the scenario "Saving Sara," Paula made a medication
administration error that could have had fatal consequences. According to the Leader-Member
Exchange Theory, Paula is part of the "out-group" because she lacks motivation and does not
trust management (Lunenburg, 2010). On the other hand, Kenny is part of the "in the group" and
is more skilled and trustworthy. In this scenario, Sara is showing transformational leadership by
trying to understand how the medication error occurred. By coaching Paula and reassuring her
that she is a good nurse, Sara motivates her to do better. This is the appropriate response in this
situation because it will help to prevent future errors.

Hi.

Sara does a great job displaying transformational leadership qualities in this week's
episode. She is productive and on top of issues and immediately listens and formulates solutions
with her team members when there is an issue. I agree that Paula displays "out-group"
characteristics as explained in the leader-member exchange theory. Sara does a good job of
encouraging Paula to display more "in-group" characteristics, but Paula seems resistant. Part of

the problem is that Paula does not seem to feel like she is part of the team (Lunenburg, 2010).
Sara needs to find a way to make Paula feel more included and valued if she wants her to start
displaying more "in-group" behaviours. References
